MCS TV, the Altice Group service dedicated to premium sports, has chosen compression software from Paris based ATEME for its new Ultra HD channel. Initially to be launched in France on cable and optical fiber networks, the channel will then be made available OTT overseas after a few months.
Called TITAN, the compression software works for cable, DTH and OTT delivery, aiming to sustain high video quality at minimum bitrates for both main broadcast and multiscreen applications, at resolutions ranging from mobile device profiles up to full UHDp60. TITAN incorporates SDI and IP I/O’s, encoder, transcoder, multiplexer, statmux, packager and origin server. According to ATEME it can be integrated quickly and easily with any ecosystem, reducing time-to-market and OPEX.
“We chose TITAN File for the transcoding of our 4K content in HEVC for our play-out server and TITAN 4K for the transmission of our live events, based on the product’s degree of maturity and reliability and its ability to evolve to suit future UHD formats,” said Mickael Czmara, CTO at MCS TV. “Using pure software solutions running on COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) hardware provides the flexibility we need, and will also lead to additional financial and operational efficiencies across this area of our business.”
This announcement comes just a week after MCS gave its first large scale broadcast in UHD of a major event. On December 30 2015 MCS showed the entire basketball All Star Game in 4K UHD live, which the channel described as a first in France for an event of this magnitude. Started in 1987, the All-Star Game has brought together the best home grown players with those of the foreign France Pro A league.
