What is DigiCipher 2?

DigiCipher 2 (DCII): proprietary standard format (General Instrument -> Motorola -> Google -> Arrisof digital signal transmission and encryption with MPEG-2/MPEG-4 signal video compression used on many communications satellite television and audio signals

The DCII standard is incompatible with the DVB standard.

The primary difference between DigiCipher 2 and DVB lies in how each standard handles SI metadata
DigiCipher 2 also extends the MPEG program number that is assigned for each service in a transport stream with the concept of a virtual channel number, whereas the DVB system never defined this type of remapping preferring to use a registry of network identifiers to further differentiate program numbers from those used in other transport streams.
Also unlike DVB, all text used in descriptors can be compressed using standard Huffman coding which saves on broadcast bandwidth and loading times.
Approximately 70% of newer first-generation digital cable networks in North America use the DigiCipher 2 format. The use of DCII is most prevalent in North American digital cable television set top boxes

Broadcom BCM7251: Ultra-High-Definition TV SoC

System-on-a-Chip (SoC) for multi-HD/UltraHD IP Set-top Boxes (STBs). It integrates the High-Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC), or H.265 standard, which enables more UltraHD content.
It also incorporates Dual Display, a feature that enables presentation of two simultaneous video channels from the same STB via independent HDMI outputs and remote control devices.

FEATURES

  • 28 nm process technology chip
  • High-performance dual-core Brahma15 10 000 DMIPs ARMv7 processors, 2180p60 or dual 1080p60 decode and transcode capabilities
  • Integrates high-performance connectivity peripherals, such as USB 3.0, PCIe, Gigabit Ethernet and MoCA 2.0
  • Latest generation security core offers the highest level of platform security, content protection and DRM robustness
  • Industry-leading support for high-speed DDR3 and DDR4 devices

Entone's acquisition by Amino Technologies

Amino (UK) acquires Entone (US) consolidating the pay TV market

Amino Technologies has completed its acquisition of Entone, a provider of hybrid TV and connected home solutions.

“This transformational acquisition broadens our capabilities and market reach globally across IPTV, hybrid broadcast and a range of connected home solutions.” - Donald McGarva, Chief Executive of Amino

Why?: The acquisition gives Amino access to critical markets, including parts of China, Europe, Latin America and the United States.
The combined companies could become a force in the Tier 2 and Tier 3 service provider space.
Both companies have been fine-tuning their hybrid distribution models that allow operators to leverage their connections in the home into a broadband/OTT and pay TV play.

History:

This is aligned with their recent acquisition of cloud-TV platform provider Booxmedia as part of Amino's transition to cloud-based IP-driven multiscreen entertainment delivery.

Entone’s investors include Coral Group, Menlo Venture Right and Scale Venture Partners.
Based in Cupertino, Entone has been around since 2000 and has raised some $24 million in funding. It hasn’t been to that well since its Series B round, a $14.5 million infusion, in 2008.

Amino, meanwhile, also today announced unaudited results for the six month period ended May 31, including year-on-year revenue growth of 9% and EBITDA growth of 34%, before exceptional items.
Stay tuned.
