Copenhagen buses to go electric by 2020

11 May 2016

City mayor questions the increased taxes that the new vehicles must pay

Copenhagen’s buses will make the switch from diesel to electric when current bus contracts expire in 2019.
The move is expected to help the city mayor, Frank Jensen, in his push for a carbon-neutral Copenhagen by 2025.
A total of 385 buses are expected to be replaced covering 33 bus lines.

“Completely wrong”
The electric buses are expected to cost around 68 million kroner more per year than the current diesel buses.
A significant amount of this cost is due to the high rate of electricity tax on buses, which is three times the amount payable on fuel tax.
“It is absurd that the current tax policies are favouring diesel buses rather than electricity,” Frank Jensen told Politiken.
“And it is completely wrong, the buses in public transport must pay 200 times more electricity tax than the national rail operator does.”

Copenhagen Airport among Europe’s fastest growing

12 May 2016
Nordic hub saw a 13.2 percent increase during the first three months of the year

Over the first three months of 2016, Copenhagen Airport has been the fourth-fastest growing airport in Europe, according to the airport council ACI Europe.
The Danish capital’s airport saw an increase of 13.2 percent during the first three months of 2016 compared to the same period in the previous year.
“The growth is naturally down to the Danes travelling more, but there are also many more travellers from abroad coming to Denmark,” Peter Krogsgaard, the commercial head of Copenhagen Airport, told Check-In.dk.

“We can see considerable growth in the number of tourists and business travellers coming to Copenhagen. It’s helping generate growth and jobs across Denmark.”

Turkish delight
Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport was the fastest growing larg airports in Europe with 19.5 percent growth, followed by Dublin (17.5 percent), Barcelona-El Prat (16.1 percent), and Copenhagen and Amsterdam Schiphol (12.4 percent).
The ACI Europe report showed that Europe’s airports enjoyed an average passenger growth of 7.8 percent, while the EU nations saw an 8.2 percent increase.

Copenhagen hailed as most ‘vital’ city in new study

11 May 2016
Copenhagen hailed the most ‘vital’ city as a result of its strong sustainability, cycling and mobility credentials.

The Future Spaces Foundation’s study, Vital Cities: Transport Systems Scorecard, an interactive data hub, awards connectivity ratings to twelve cities across the world.

The research looks at key factors that make cities thrive, for example breathability, bike and foot networks, use of data and apps, ranking each city based on its performance across more than 30 individual measures. Based on a mix of qualitative assessments, such as the strength of electric vehicle policies and hard data, such as the density of transit networks, the scorecard aggregates each individual score to award an overall A-F grade.

The Foundation undertook the research in order to assess how transport infrastructure can facilitate vitality within high density cities; as well as to identify how improved connectivity can allow for sustainable growth for future generations.

The chosen 12 cities were grouped into four categories; Global Cities (London, New York, Hong Kong); Mega Cities (Beijing, Mumbai, Sao Paulo); Green Cities (Copenhagen, Singapore, Vancouver); and Car Cities (Dubai, Houston, Kuala Lumpur).

Whilst no city scored a perfect A+ overall, Copenhagen, with its first-class record for sustainability, safety and mobility, topped the scorecard with an impressive B+ score. Long-term investment and an ability to adapt to the ever-growing consumer demand for real-time information withinnovative data policies helped Global Cities to gain pace with Copenhagen.

In the meantime, Car Cities lagged behind the rest due to their poor efforts to curb car use and promote vehicle-sharing, walking and cycling, all receiving a D or D- grade overall.

As Mega Cities continue to boom, propelled by industrialisation and mass migration from rural areas, low incomes and rapidly rising populations proved to be particular challenges to improving networks and ensuring that basic infrastructure meets demands in these cities.

However, innovative new uses of data and apps to improve connectivity in a cost-effective way are helping these cities to gain pace with global competitors.

What is DigiCipher 2?

DigiCipher 2 (DCII): proprietary standard format (General Instrument -> Motorola -> Google -> Arris) of digital signal transmission and encryption with MPEG-2/MPEG-4 signal video compression used on many communications satellite television and audio signals

The DCII standard is incompatible with the DVB standard.

The primary difference between DigiCipher 2 and DVB lies in how each standard handles SI metadata,
DigiCipher 2 also extends the MPEG program number that is assigned for each service in a transport stream with the concept of a virtual channel number, whereas the DVB system never defined this type of remapping preferring to use a registry of network identifiers to further differentiate program numbers from those used in other transport streams.
Also unlike DVB, all text used in descriptors can be compressed using standard Huffman coding which saves on broadcast bandwidth and loading times.
Approximately 70% of newer first-generation digital cable networks in North America use the DigiCipher 2 format. The use of DCII is most prevalent in North American digital cable television set top boxes.

Broadcom BCM7251: Ultra-High-Definition TV SoC

System-on-a-Chip (SoC) for multi-HD/UltraHD IP Set-top Boxes (STBs). It integrates the High-Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC), or H.265 standard, which enables more UltraHD content.

Entone's acquisition by Amino Technologies

Amino (UK) acquires Entone (US) consolidating the pay TV market

Amino Technologies has completed its acquisition of Entone, a provider of hybrid TV and connected home solutions.

“This transformational acquisition broadens our capabilities and market reach globally across IPTV, hybrid broadcast and a range of connected home solutions.” - Donald McGarva, Chief Executive of Amino

Why?: The acquisition gives Amino access to critical markets, including parts of China, Europe, Latin America and the United States.
The combined companies could become a force in the Tier 2 and Tier 3 service provider space.
Both companies have been fine-tuning their hybrid distribution models that allow operators to leverage their connections in the home into a broadband/OTT and pay TV play.

History:

This is aligned with their recent acquisition of cloud-TV platform provider Booxmedia as part of Amino's transition to cloud-based IP-driven multiscreen entertainment delivery.

Entone’s investors include Coral Group, Menlo Venture Right and Scale Venture Partners.
Based in Cupertino, Entone has been around since 2000 and has raised some $24 million in funding. It hasn’t been to that well since its Series B round, a $14.5 million infusion, in 2008.

Amino, meanwhile, also today announced unaudited results for the six month period ended May 31, including year-on-year revenue growth of 9% and EBITDA growth of 34%, before exceptional items.
Stay tuned.
